Author Ileana Schinder will join us via Zoom as part of Kittery's town-wide Books & Big Ideas to talk about her book, Housing for Humans: A Book to Imagine, Create and Design a New Housing Model in America.

"The affordable housing crisis today can be solved through innovative residential and urban design. Family models have evolved, society has reframed the role of cities, and ongoing urban realities demand opportunities to create housing for all, from first-time homeowners to retirees.

This book navigates the design process of new housing, like additional dwelling units, and explores ideas that can be implemented from the suburbs to cities. Through the history of urban design, zoning regulation, and with an emphasis on the human side of housing, ileana schinder, with her architecture background, highlights the role that the home plays in society today."

Ileana Schinder is an architect. Since opening her studio in 2014, she has designed homes and additional dwelling units that create new spaces for clients and their families to thrive. Ileana was born and raised in Argentina, and lives in Washington, DC, with her family and their dog, Cecilia.

This event is part of the spring portion of Books & Big Ideas, which focuses on the theme of housing. Kittery and Maine as a whole, are in a housing crisis, which means there is a shortage of affordable housing options available to residents and workers of all ages.  The spring topic is “sponsored” by the Kittery Housing Committee and is part of their year-long community information drive.

Copies of Housing for Humans are available at the main circulation desk. All members of the community are invited to read and join the discussion.
